In Loppa, the fishing season begins in early March and continues till October. The local waters are an important fishing ground of trophy Atlantic cod, especially in March and April, when huge shoals of parent Atlantic cod come to the coast to spawn. It is common here to catch individuals whose weight exceeds 20 kg, and if you are lucky, you can catch cod weighing about 30 kg. Parent cod are present in the local waters all the year round, so even in summer and autumn it is not uncommon to catch individuals whose length is up to 150 cm. Big saithe up to a length of 130 cm are caught here too. The best time for catching big saithe is August and September.
It is also very easy to catch Atlantic wolfish here as they live in large numbers in this part of the world, particularly in summer months. In depths from 150 metres on, European sea bass are caught. But the main reason why fishermen took a fancy to fishing in Loppa is halibut. Vast sandbanks around the islands of Silda and Loppa are the best place for catching trophy halibut, which are caught there all the year round. However, the best time for catching really big individuals is August and September. Halibut are best caught with a whole pollock (roughly 30 cm long), but they do not say no to Ripper baits 15 to 30 cm long either. Halibut are caught most often in depths from 30 to 70 metres. If you are in the right place at the right time, it is no problem to catch a few pieces of this beautiful fish. A big advantage of this locality is its location among fiords, where you can fish even if the weather is very bad. Not far from Bergsfjord there are many good fishing grounds. It takes 15 to 30 minutes to get to the very best places on the islands of Silda and Loppa. Another big advantage of this locality is the Czech owner who is a passionate fisherman himself. He will be pleased to advise you with respect to the best places for fishing, what kind of bait should be used and how to prepare correctly for catching halibut. The GPS shows the best places on the map. Less experienced fishermen, who do not know this locality, can hire the owner as a guide. The price per day is NOK 1,000.
